FTC, State Prosecutors Seek to Break Up Facebook for ‘Anticompetitive Conduct’

The Federal Trade Commission and 46 state attorneys general are calling on the court to potentially break up Facebook over claims the company has an illegal monopoly over the social networking industry.

On Wednesday, the FTC and a coalition of state prosecutors filed two antitrust lawsuits against Facebook, alleging the company established the monopoly by buying would-be rivals, Instagram and WhatsApp, in 2012 and 2014 respectively.

In response, FTC and state prosecutors will ask a U.S. district court to rectify the situation, which could include forcing Facebook to divest both properties.
