A “diamond in the rough” symbolizes something or someone oozing promise and value — albeit after a little polishing. As a former diamond dealer, I’m all too familiar with the notion.
However, I was forced out of the industry: After I’d been robbed a few too many times, insurance carriers saw me as too risky an investment to continue offering coverage. Instead of searching for diamonds in the rough, I had to become one.
